Intro
Hello! I am Dr. Ann M. Hetzel, a Clinical Psychologist licensed in Ohio and Virginia. My initiation into the world of autism occurred when a family member was diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome. (This was the early ‘90’s.) After reading many books on autism, I yearned for more knowledge. At the time, I was a classically-trained musician and band director yet decided to change my profession, return to school, and become a psychologist so that I would be well-prepared to pursue my passion; working with individuals diagnosed with autism.
When autism diagnoses began to increase in the 1990s and early 2000s, the focus was on children and earlier identification. I am so excited that now, the focus has widened as we understand that not everyone is diagnosed as a child. Working with autistic adults is very important to me as I have a family member and close friends who are autistic adults. They bring a unique richness to their relationships and to the world. Often, I have discussed with autistic adults the benefits and challenges they experience regarding their differences or “other-ness.” I endeavor to provide helpful information to individuals who desire to learn more about themselves within a safe space for sharing, exchanging information, exploration, and understanding. Working with autistic adults is a privilege.
Inside each of us is a human being with strengths and possibilities. I feel strongly that it is important to focus on those strengths, while using them to support our well-being and achieve amazing things in life. During feedback sessions, I acknowledge strengths, share new perspectives, and provide suggestions for paths to create additional strengths.
