Your Need for Routine

The role routines, focused interests, and repetitive patterns play in your daily life and overall well-being.

I cannot recommend Prosper highly enough! My psychologist was compassionate and attentive, and provided me with helpful resources post-diagnosis. I am working with a Prosper therapist, and after just a few sessions, I already feel so much more optimistic about how to move forward in life!" actually tried cutting down regardless.

I have been trying to get diagnosed for months. I could not find anyone that was familiar with autism in adult women, let alone challenges like masking. Prosper made the evaluation process extremely easy and helped me reach a new level of self understanding!

FAQs for adult autism assessments

What are the common signs of autism in adults?

Common signs of autism in adults include difficulty with social cues and understanding sarcasm, repetitive behaviors like hand-flapping or rocking, intense focus on special interests, and sensory sensitivities, such as being overwhelmed by sounds or textures or not noticing pain or temperature changes.

Is the diagnostic process different for men and women?

The key features of the diagnostic process are the same, no matter a person’s gender. However, the way the psychologist interprets the data from the evaluation will be influenced by gender identity, access to services, and other factors that research shows will affect how autism may show up in a person. For instance, people who are identified as female in childhood may have more enhanced masking skills and may show different play skills from those who are identified male in childhood. Our psychologists know this and take it into consideration during evaluations.

What are the criteria to be diagnosed with autism?

To be diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, individuals must meet the following criteria:

  1. Deficits in Social Communication and Interaction
    • Challenges with social-emotional reciprocity, nonverbal communication, and building or maintaining relationships.
  2. Restricted, Repetitive Patterns of Behavior or Interests
    • Repetitive movements or speech, insistence on routines, intense special interests, or unusual sensory responses.
  3. Symptoms Must
    • Be present from early development (though they may emerge later).
    • Cause significant impairment in daily life.
    • Not be better explained by other conditions.

Can autism be misdiagnosed as something else?

When a psychiatric, developmental, or mental health condition which does not have a medical test is diagnosed, a misdiagnosis is possible. Prosper Health mitigates against misdiagnosis if a few ways:

  • we collect reliability information to ensure the psychologists are reaching the same conclusion that another clinician would reach from the data;
  • we are thorough in collecting information about early development;
  • our process includes steps to rule out common situations that can mimic autism;
  • we are comprehensive in interview, rating forms, and observation to document autistic traits.

What are the limitations of Prosper assessments?

The Prosper Health assessment is NOT a full neuropsych. It is an ASD-only assessment and is completed entirely virtually. Given this, Prosper may not be a good fit if:

  • the case is highly complex with multiple differential diagnoses needed
  • there are immediate mental health needs for higher level of care
  • the client is non-speaking or unable to report their internal states and personal history
  • the client is unable or unwilling to be on camera
  • the client are seeking accommodations that specifically require a physician or full-neuropsych

Do you provide letters for support animals, FMLA, or other forms?

Our therapists can help with this. Our evaluations are very narrowly focused and do not yield enough information for our psychologists to complete any outside forms or recommendation letters. We typically recommend that clients take their report to their primary care provider or therapist to complete.
