FAQs about adult autism therapy
What is adult autism therapy?
Adult autism therapy helps autistic individuals develop communication and social skills while addressing emotional challenges and cooccurring conditions like anxiety or depression.
Do I need a formal autism diagnosis to start therapy?
Nope! The most important thing you need to start therapy is an idea of what you would like to work on or how you would like your life to be different. If you have difficulty putting this into words, your therapist can help you define your goals.
How is therapy for autistic adults different from therapy for children?
Psychotherapy, the formal way of referring to talk therapy, should be based on consideration of what the client wants for their life. At PH, we prioritize enhancing the client’s quality of life, whatever that means for them.
In contrast, therapy for children sometimes places an emphasis on what parents or teachers want for the child, rather than what the child wants. Therapy for children may be overly focused on changing autistic traits, rather than being autism-affirming.
Can therapy help with co-occurring conditions like anxiety or depression?
Yes, therapy can effectively address co-occurring conditions like anxiety or depression in autistic adults by using evidence-based approaches to increase emotional wellbeing and resilience.
How long does adult autism therapy typically last?
The length of therapy is determined by the client’s goals and their progress toward meeting them. Therapy research suggests that autistic adults may take somewhat longer in therapy than their non-autistic counterparts, but the length of a course of therapy can vary broadly, depending on the person’s goals and progress.
What if I have difficulty communicating or expressing myself during therapy?
PH therapists are trained to work with the client to help with communication and self-expression. PH therapists are trained to use visual supports, and there are a number of specific therapy tools we use to help support communication. PH therapists are also trained to adapt their pacing and wording to better suit client needs, which can also help with communication.
What types of therapy are most effective for adults with autism?
There’s not a lot of research on mental health therapy for autistic adults! Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is well-researched and considered a best practice for addressing the anxiety and depression which can co-occur with autism. There’s also an increasing amount of research that dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) and other mindfulness-based approaches (e.g., acceptance and commitment therapy/ACT, etc.) can be effective.
