Intro

Hi, I’m Dr. Hilah Kaufman (pronounced Hee-lah), a licensed clinical psychologist in Virginia with extensive experience in psychological assessment across the lifespan. I am passionate about helping individuals gain a deeper understanding of themselves and their unique ways of experiencing the world. My approach is rooted in neurodiversity-affirming care, and I strive to create a safe, validating space where you feel heard, respected, and empowered. I understand that seeking an autism evaluation can bring a mix of emotions—curiosity, relief, or even uncertainty—and I’m here to guide you through the process with warmth, professionalism, and a commitment to ensuring you feel supported every step of the way.

What motivated you to specialize in working with autistic adults?

I’ve dedicated my career to psychological assessment and the power of measurement in informing and supporting care. Over the years, I’ve worked with individuals from diverse backgrounds, many of whom have spent their lives navigating experiences that felt unexplained or misunderstood. I know how transformative it can be to finally have answers—especially for adults who have masked their traits, received misdiagnoses, or felt unseen in traditional mental health settings. My work is driven by the belief that everyone deserves to be understood for who they truly are, not just in terms of challenges but also through the unique strengths they bring to the world. Understanding your neurodivergence isn’t about labeling—it’s about gaining insight that fosters self-awareness, self-compassion, and a path toward the support you deserve.

How do you bring a strengths-based, affirming approach to your client work?

My approach to assessment is affirming, non-pathologizing, and focused on recognizing your strengths. If you’ve been wondering whether autism might explain your experiences—whether for years or just recently—I am here to listen and provide clarity in a way that honors your lived experiences. I ensure that assessments are thorough, individualized, and reflective of the full complexity of each person. My goal is to offer insights that help you better understand yourself, embrace your strengths, and access the tools and support that allow you to thrive.
