Intro

Hello and welcome! My name is Althia Gamble McLaughlin. I am originally from New Jersey but now live in North Carolina. I’m a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor (LCMHC). Prior to my work as a therapist, I worked in New York City as a writer and journalist. I enjoyed telling stories. But it was not by coincidence that my first name “ALTHIA”means “healer” and that I was drawn to a new profession that involved healing. I changed careers to become a psychotherapist because I recognized that I wanted to use my gift of empathy to not only hear stories, but to also help others during their healing journeys, partnering with them while they rewrite the stories of their lives. I have specialized training in trauma and have worked with a wide range of populations over the years, including autistic/neurodivergent clients.

What motivated you to specialize in working with autistic adults?

My motivation for working with autistic neurodivergent adult stems from my deep personal connection to the neurodivergent community through family members. I’ve witnessed firsthand both the unique challenges they face and their remarkable resilience and abilities. Through their experiences, I’ve seen how the right support can make a huge difference in daily lives – from managing sensory challenges to building meaningful relationships. I’ve also observed how unmet needs, and lack of understanding can lead to trauma. Yet with proper support and strategies, neurodivergent individuals can thrive by leveraging their natural strengths. Their journeys have inspired me to create a therapeutic space where neurodivergent clients feel truly seen, understood, and empowered to build lives that honor who they are.

How do you bring a strengths-based, affirming approach to your client work?

I believe in meeting each client exactly where they are, celebrating what makes them unique. I create a welcoming space where my clients can be completely be themselves while working through challenges. I’m not here to “fix” anyone – my approach is all about understanding, compassion, and building on your natural strengths. Together, we’ll find strategies that work for your brain and your life, helping you thrive in ways that feel authentic to you
