Intro

Hello and welcome!  I look forward to working with you!  My name is Ellen McHugh and I live in beautiful Charleston, SC where I'm close to the beach and lovely natural areas.  I am passionate about helping individuals work toward greater well-being, self-awareness and self-compassion.  I want to create a safe, warm space where you can begin to feel comfortable, truly heard and understood.  I like to tell clients that they are in the "driver's seat" during sessions as we work together to meet goals for therapy.  I believe that you have personal strengths and resilience that will allow you to be honest and open during sessions, even when addressing difficult emotions and problems.  My typical clients are adults ages 18 and up who are experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma, stress and/or relationship challenges.

What motivated you to specialize in working with autistic adults?

I am interested in working with neurodivergent clients because I have had the opportunity to do so in the past and recently I have been diagnosed (in my 60's) with ADHD.  This diagnosis  gives me a unique lens through which to view you and your experiences, regardless of whether you identify as neurodivergent or neurotypical.  I honor each person's unique experiences and will work with you to help you feel better understood, supported and able to thrive in our often chaotic world.

How do you bring a strengths-based, affirming approach to your client work?

I believe that you possess strengths and abilities that we can use to assist you in navigating life challenges and achieving personal goals.  You have already shown courage in asking for help and this courage can go far to help you in working toward better mental health and an improved sense of overall well-being.
