Intro

Hi everyone!  I'm Heidi, and I'm a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in Florida.  I've spent years living with and working with neurodivergent individuals in various roles and have seen firsthand the frustration that comes from not being understood.  I am trained in foster, adoption, and trauma counseling.  My experience has taught me to really listen to and respect my clients' autonomy and individuality.

What motivated you to specialize in working with autistic adults?

My young adult daughter is on the Autism Spectrum and was recently diagnosed with ADHD as well.  From her and others, I have learned the importance of listening and respecting her choices.  In fact, she gave me permission to write this! I also have other family members on the Autism Spectrum, with ADHD, high intellect, and with multiple exceptionalities.  In a previous academic position, I used to love coming up with creative ways to make life easier for my students.  I am, and most of my friends are, self-identified as "geeks".  We have experienced firsthand the pain of being misinterpreted and the embarrassment of being teased for thinking differently than the crowd.  I'd like to hear about your interests and explore ways to incorporate them therapeutically.

How do you bring a strengths-based, affirming approach to your client work?

I love to ask my clients questions about themselves, and learning about their hobbies and interests is usually one of my first session questions.  If I can, I like to use your individual strengths and interests in our work together.  My approach to counseling is like going on a car trip with my client.  You are the driver, so you decide where you want to go (goals).  I'm just the GPS, so my job is to show you different ways to get where you want to go (achieve your goals), help you stay on the right road, and keep you from driving off the route.  The beauty of that is that since you are the driver, you can always decide if you want to change your destination (goals), and my job as the GPS is to then "recalculate" and offer you new routes.  Once you select the new route, we work together in a collaborative process to get you there.
