During my clinical psychology internship and fellowship years, I had the opportunity to work with a number of neurodivergent individuals. These experiences were truly eye-opening. I noticed a significant gap in mental health services and diagnostic assessment for neurodivergent adults. Many of my patients shared stories of feeling misunderstood or dismissed by previous clinicians who lacked specific training in neurodiversity. I felt compelled to fill this gap and provide a safe, understanding space for these clients. What truly cemented my decision to specialize in this area was the incredible rewards of working with neurodivergent clients. Their unique perspectives, honesty, and the way they approach problems have not only made me a better clinician but have also enriched my understanding of the human experience. Helping these individuals navigate a neurotypical world while embracing their authentic selves has become my passion.
At the heart of my clinical approach is a fundamental belief: every individual possesses unique strengths and abilities that are waiting to be discovered and nurtured. When working with neurodivergent clients, my primary focus is not on addressing perceived challenges or deficits, but on identifying and amplifying inherent strengths. I view neurodiversity not as a disorder to be treated, but as a valuable form of human diversity. My approach is rooted in the understanding that autistic and neurodivergent individuals have distinct cognitive styles and perspectives that can be incredible assets.
