Intro

Hello and welcome—I’m so glad you’ve found your way here. My name is Dr. Jerry D. Smith Jr. I’m a Texas-licensed psychologist with nearly two decades of experience specializing in psychological assessment for children, adolescents, and adults. What drives me as a provider is the belief that clarity can be deeply healing. Whether you're seeking answers about attention, learning, emotional patterns, or behavior, my role is to help you understand what’s happening beneath the surface—and what can be done about it.I approach every evaluation with care, curiosity, and a commitment to honoring your unique story. Having grown up in a military family and lived across five countries, I bring a culturally responsive lens to every case. I believe assessments should not feel clinical or impersonal—they should feel like a process of discovery and collaboration. Together, we’ll work toward meaningful insight and practical recommendations you can actually use.

What motivated you to specialize in working with autistic adults?

My motivation for specializing in psychological assessment—particularly with neurodivergent individuals—comes from both personal and professional roots. As a parent of a neurodivergent child, I’ve experienced firsthand the confusion, concern, and emotional weight that can come with seeking clarity and support. I know what it’s like to sit on the other side of the table—searching for answers, trying to make sense of behavior that doesn’t fit neatly into expectations, and hoping to find someone who will see the full picture rather than just the symptoms.Professionally, I’ve worked for nearly two decades with individuals whose strengths were often overlooked because they didn’t fit a typical mold. That experience deepened my belief that assessment is not about labeling someone—it’s about understanding them. It’s about helping clients and families recognize both the challenges and the strengths that come with neurodivergence, and giving them the tools to move forward with clarity, confidence, and self-respect.I believe that neurodivergent individuals deserve assessments that are thoughtful, strengths-based, and culturally informed. My goal is to create a process where clients feel seen, heard, and respected. No one should leave an evaluation feeling reduced to a checklist. Instead, they should walk away with a deeper understanding of themselves and a clearer path ahead.

How do you bring a strengths-based, affirming approach to your client work?

I approach assessment as more than a diagnostic process—it's an opportunity to recognize and build upon the unique strengths each individual brings to the table. My goal is to ensure that every person I work with feels genuinely seen, valued, and understood. While identifying areas of concern is part of the work, I intentionally center the assessment process around uncovering personal resilience, cognitive assets, adaptive capacities, and the contextual factors that shape a person’s experience.I believe that psychological evaluation should affirm the complexity of the human experience—not reduce it. This means listening deeply to clients’ lived stories, validating their emotional realities, and presenting findings in a way that supports empowerment, not stigma. I strive to deliver clear, compassionate, and actionable feedback that helps clients, families, and providers make informed decisions that lead to growth, not just intervention. As someone who has lived in multiple cultural contexts and is a parent of a neurodivergent child, I recognize the importance of cultural humility and lived empathy. I’m committed to fostering an inclusive, affirming assessment environment where diversity in identity, ability, and life experience is not only respected but meaningfully integrated into the evaluation process.
