Intro

Hello! I’m Leanne Valentine, a licensed clinical psychologist in Pennsylvania. I worked for the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) for 15 years as a front-line clinician and also as a supervisor. I also worked briefly for West Chester University (WCU) at their Community Mental Health Clinic. I have specialized training in the treatment of trauma and anxiety-related disorders. I also have extensive training and experience in comprehensive psychological assessment.

What motivated you to specialize in working with autistic adults?

While working at the Community Mental Health Clinic at WCU I gained a greater appreciation of how powerful a thorough assessment and diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder can be for an individual. Having a greater understanding of how we approach the world often leads to improved functioning and decreased distress. At the VA I pushed for autism assessment for our Veterans, because the individuals I saw who learned that they had Autism Spectrum Disorder experienced relief with the new understanding and often found therapy to be much more effective.

How do you bring a strengths-based, affirming approach to your client work?

We all have struggles, and we all have strengths. Unfortunately, when we struggle we tend to focus on our weaknesses. The most rewarding aspect of my work is helping my clients see and utilize their strengths to live a life that they value. I see a diagnosis as an explanation, as well as a blueprint for how we can work together to achieve your most important goals.
