Intro

Hello and welcome, I’m Dr. Terri M. Guilford, a dedicated clinical forensic psychologist passionate about helping individuals navigate life’s challenges with resilience and self-discovery. Originally, from New York, I now call Virginia home and hold licenses in both Virginia and Texas. My journey in psychology has been shaped by diverse experiences, from working with incarcerated individuals with varying needs to supporting clients in private practice. These experiences have deepened my belief in the power of therapy to foster growth, healing, and transformation, no matter a person’s background or circumstances.I take an integrative and compassionate approach, tailoring therapy to meet each person where they are. My goal is to create a safe, supportive space where you feel heard, understood, and empowered to move forward. Whether you're facing personal struggles, life transitions, or deeper emotional challenges, I’m here to walk alongside you on your path to healing.I’d love the opportunity to support you—let’s take this step together.

What motivated you to specialize in working with autistic adults?

My passion for working with autistic and neurodivergent persons stems from a deep appreciation for the unique perspectives, strengths, and challenges they bring to the world. Over the years, I’ve seen firsthand how often neurodivergent individuals are misunderstood, overlooked, or expected to conform to neurotypical standards that don’t honor their authentic selves. This drove me to specialize in creating a safe, validating space where they can be heard, supported, and empowered. Whether working with clients navigating sensory sensitivities, communication differences, or co-occurring mental health challenges, I am committed to helping them build self-understanding, confidence, and meaningful connections in a way that aligns with their needs and values. My approach is always affirming, strengths-based, and tailored to celebrate neurodiversity rather than change it.

How do you bring a strengths-based, affirming approach to your client work?

When working with autistic individuals, I take an affirming, strengths-based approach that honors their unique ways of thinking, communicating, and experiencing the world. Rather than viewing autism through a deficit-based lens, I focus on recognizing and amplifying each person’s strengths, whether that’s deep focus, creativity, passion for special interests, or a unique way of processing information. I create a validating space where clients feel understood and supported, helping them navigate challenges of the neurotypical expectations that are placed on them. My work is rooted in collaboration, self-advocacy, and empowerment—helping clients develop strategies that work for them while fostering self-acceptance and confidence.
